Safety of Home Birth

HOME BIRTH has many benefits.

Homebirth means that you do not have to go anywhere once labor begins. The midwife comes to you.

You are in charge. You can move around or rest as you please. Perhaps a nice walk outside or a warm shower will soothe you. Eating and drinking during labor are encouraged to keep up your strength and stamina.

The midwife monitors the baby every few minutes with a portable Doppler. She comes where you are to check on baby's heart rate. She comes to you to check your blood pressure or monitor your progress.

Your family and/or friend(s) can assist you. It is up to you who attends. Siblings can participate.

You choose where you give birth. You could be on the bed, in the shower, in a water birth tub, squatting on the floor or anywhere else that feels right to you.

Baby comes right to you immediately as she/he is born. Initial assessment is done with baby on your chest. You and baby are never separated. The complete newborn exam is done right there beside you.

Breastfeeding can take it's natural course. In the safety of mama's arms most babies latch right on within the first 20 minutes.

The midwife monitors you and baby after the birth while being sensitive to the natural inclination of mother, baby and family for privacy during the initial bonding period.
